Mod Warm-up for Choir

In a break with the tradition of competing in the annual provincial Mod in Oban, the Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir last weekend entered the East Kilbride Mod.  The exercise served as a warm-up for the Choir’s choral competitions in its own local Mod this weekend. “We’ve always looked forward to our annual trip to Oban” said Choir conductor Frances McCallum “ but this year, the Senior section was cancelled in Oban, so we decided to test the water in East Kilbride – and it was very enjoyable. We were warmly welcomed, it was an lovely informal atmosphere, and the standard of competition was high – my choir loves a challenge!”

Competing for the East Kilbride Choir Cup with the Aberfeldy Choir, which came in 2nd place,  were Cumbernauld, (1st) and Glasgow Islay (3rd). In the Puirt a Beul, there were just 4 points between Glasgow Islay (1st) and Aberfeldy (3rd).  The male sections of the Aberfeldy Choir got special praise from the judges, and the Choir, although not winning either competition, gained the overall highest marks in music. “It was a very close competition” said Frances “ and although we didn’t win a trophy, it’s wonderful just to compete, especially when the bass and tenor sections made such an impression. Long may it continue – especially at our own Mod on Saturday!”
