15th June 2013

Success at the Provincial Mod

Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir has again enjoyed success at the annual Perthshire and Angus Provincial Mod on Saturday 15th June 2013. Against stiff competition, we were awarded the Westcroft Trophy for our Own Choice songs, Siubhal a' Coire and Eilean Mo Crìdh', gaining the highest points for music and tying in first place with Dundee for Gaelic.

We were also awarded second place for the Puirt a Beul (mouth music) piece S'math a Dhannsadh Uisdean Friseal, with Stirling winning the Frances Matheson Quaich for first prize.

Everyone worked hard to achieve such good results, but much of the credit must surely go to conductor May Brown and Gaelic tutor Mary Stewart for their excellent guidance.

The Duet competition was won by the Choir's members June Riddell and John Duff, a notable victory not least because it was the first time they have competed together, but also because they beat the formidable duo of Gilliain MacDonald and May Brown into second place. (!!!)

June also won the Euan MacDiarmid trophy for solo singing (learners). Gilliain, in the meantime, swept the board for Gaelic solo singing, winning three trophies.

Gilliain and May were joined by Brian Owen and Peter MacIntosh to lift the Michael Drury Memorial Trophy for the Quartet class.

The Mod was well attended by other choirs; along with Oban, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Stirling, it was especially good to welcome the recently formed Perth Gaelic Choir to Aberfeldy.

The post-competition Ceilidh was held at the Black Watch Inn, with plenty more singing - as usual.
