Winners at the National Mod, Inverness 2014

Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir has again triumphed at the Royal National Mod, which took place this year in Inverness.

Competing in the Margrat Duncan competition against choirs from Portree, Nairn, Edinburgh, Dundee, Largs and Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, Aberfeldy won the competition handsomely by a margin of five points to lift the Margrat Duncan Memorial Trophy and the An Comunn Centennial Baton.

Singing “Oran Do Iain Caimbeul A’ Bhanca” (Song to John Campbell of the Bank), written by 18th Century Gaelic poet Duncan Ban MacIntyre, and “Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh” (The Lament for John Roy) the Aberfeldy Choir received the highest music mark (183 out of 200) also winning them the Stafffinders Quaich. The choir received 182 points (out of 200) for their Gaelic pronunciation but were pipped at the post for the highest Gaelic mark by Dundee Gaelic Choir who scored 183 to receive the John MacNicol Memorial Trophy. With a total of mark of 365, Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir took first place over Dundee Gaelic Choir on 360. Nairn Gaelic Choir were third with 359.

Choir leader, May Brown, stated “I am so proud of the choir members for their fantastic performance. They sang their hearts out and we have received many compliments for our music and Gaelic from other choirs who heard us compete.”
